Environment

The Martha and Correnso mines in Waihi, New Zealand, are operating gold and silver mines, managed by OceanaGold Waihi.

The Martha open pit has been operating since 1988. It is unique in New Zealand in that it is situated in a residential area, in close proximity to a thriving community; it is the subject of intense public interest. We are dedicated to maintaining operations in a socially and environmentally responsible manner. Restraints and conditions have been placed on the operation that take into account the mine’s proximity to the town. These conditions include hours of work, permitted blasting times and permitted noise, dust and vibration levels.

The Correnso underground mine operates under a residential area in Waihi East. Like the Martha Mine, Corenso consent conditions are stringent due to the operation’s proximity to neighbouring residential properties.

Martha and Correnso ore is treated at the processing plant, situated almost two kilometres from the open pit, beyond the town boundary. Water treatment and tailings storage facilities are also situated near the processing plant.
